Three Cliffs Bay takes its name from the three pointed limestone crags that jut onto the sand at its eastern side, pierced by a natural arch. Behind them the stream of Pennard Pill loops through a valley of salt marsh and dunes, watched over by the broken gatehouse of Pennard Castle. It has been voted among Britain’s finest views more than once, and it earns it.
There is no car park, café or road at the beach, and that is the point. Everybody arrives on foot, so even in high summer the bay never feels built up. At high tide it shrinks to a small cove; at low tide it joins up with Pobbles Bay to the east and the huge sands of Oxwich Bay to the west.
Top things to do: Three Cliffs Bay
Walk in over the cliffs from Southgate
From the National Trust car park at Southgate, a level cliff-top path heads west for about a mile (1.5 km) to the first full view of the bay — the easiest way to see it. Continue down through the dunes to the beach, or turn inland to the castle.
Visit Pennard Castle
The castle was built by the Norman lords of Gower and abandoned by about 1400 as blown sand buried the settlement around it. What survives is a gatehouse and a stretch of curtain wall on the edge of a golf course, with the best high view over the bay. Entry is free and open at all times.
Cross the stepping stones
A line of stepping stones crosses Pennard Pill in the valley below the castle, linking the paths from Parkmill and Penmaen. They can be under water at high spring tides, so have a plan B.
Take a guided circular walk
A local guide will link the cliffs, castle, valley and beach into one loop and time it for the tide. See the Three Cliffs Bay guided walk on our tours page.

How to get to Three Cliffs Bay
- By car: about 8 miles (13 km) and 25 minutes from Swansea. Park at Southgate (National Trust, pay and display) for the cliff route, or in Parkmill for the valley route past the castle. Roadside parking at Penmaen is very limited.
- By bus: Gower buses from Swansea stop at Parkmill, about 25 minutes’ walk from the beach, and services also run to Pennard/Southgate. Check Traveline Cymru for current times.
Insider tips
- Do not swim near the river mouth or on a falling tide: the currents at Three Cliffs are strong and have taken lives. Lifeguards patrol only in the main summer season — check locally.
- The nearest toilets and cafés are at Southgate and Parkmill, not at the beach. Bring water.
- Low tide is best for the beach and the arch; high tide is prettier from above.
- Paths through the dunes are soft sand and hard work. Allow more time for the walk back up than you think.
