Where to Stay in Swansea Bay

City marina, village seafront or a country inn on Gower — how to choose your base, and the places we would book.

Where you sleep shapes this trip more than most. The three bases around Swansea Bay are barely ten miles apart, but they feel like different holidays.

Swansea itself has the widest choice and the best prices, the railway and bus stations, museums and restaurants — the right base if you are arriving by train or relying on buses. Mumbles is the pick for atmosphere: a walkable seaside village with the best eating on the bay and Gower’s first beaches round the corner. And staying on Gower itself means dark skies, coast paths from the door and beaches before the day-trippers arrive — but you will want a car.

All properties below are real listings on Trip.com with their guest scores at the time of writing. Rates are indicative starting prices and vary widely by season; summer weekends, the Wales Airshow in early July and university graduation weeks sell out early.

Practical tips for booking

  • Book early for July and August. Mumbles and Gower have few hotel rooms, and the best go months ahead.
  • Check parking. City hotels often charge for it or rely on public car parks; in Mumbles a space is a genuine perk.
  • Two bases can work well on a longer trip: a night or two in the city for museums and arrival, then a move out to Mumbles or Gower.
  • Self-catering and camping are a big part of the Gower scene — cottages, farm campsites and holiday parks around Port Eynon, Oxwich and Llangennith. Many take week-long bookings only in high summer.
  • Without a car, stay in Swansea or Mumbles and visit Gower by bus or on a guided tour.

Where to stay: common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Swansea or Mumbles?

Stay in Swansea for transport, value and museums; in Mumbles for charm, restaurants and sea air. They are only 20–25 minutes apart by frequent bus, so you can enjoy both from either.

Where should I stay on Gower without a car?

It is difficult. Port Eynon, Oxwich and Rhossili have bus services, but they are infrequent in the evening and in winter. Most car-free visitors are happier in Mumbles.

Which area is best for families?

The marina and SA1 for the beach, LC waterpark and hotel pools; Mumbles for older children; Port Eynon or Oxwich for a classic bucket-and-spade week.

How far ahead should I book?

For summer weekends and school holidays, two to three months ahead in Mumbles and Gower. In the city you can usually find a room at shorter notice, except during big events.
