Waterfall Country & the Brecon Beacons

Walk behind a waterfall, then climb southern Britain’s highest peak

Where the Brecon Beacons meet the old coalfield, at the head of the Vale of Neath, four rivers cut down through limestone and gritstone in a tangle of wooded gorges. This is Waterfall Country (Bro’r Sgydau), with the greatest concentration of waterfalls and caves in Britain. Its star is Sgwd yr Eira, “the fall of snow”, where the path goes behind the curtain of water.

It is all inside the national park that in 2023 readopted its Welsh name, Bannau Brycheiniog. Half an hour further north, the park’s central ridge rises to Pen y Fan (886 m), the highest mountain in southern Britain. From Swansea the waterfalls are 35–45 minutes by car, which makes this the outstanding inland day trip.

Top things to do: Waterfall Country & the Brecon Beacons

Walk the Four Falls Trail

A waymarked loop of about 5.5 miles (9 km) from the Gwaun Hepste or Cwm Porth car parks near Ystradfellte visits Sgwd Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd y Pannwr and Sgwd yr Eira. Allow three to four hours; the spurs down to each fall are steep, with many steps.

Take the easy path to Sgwd Gwladus

From the village of Pontneddfechan a gentle riverside path, about 1.5 miles (2.5 km) each way, leads to the graceful “Lady Falls” — the best choice with younger children or limited time.

Stand behind Henrhyd Falls

At 27 metres (90 ft) Henrhyd is the tallest waterfall in South Wales, and it doubled as the entrance to the Batcave in The Dark Knight Rises. A steep 15-minute path leads down from the National Trust car park near Coelbren.

Climb Pen y Fan

The standard route from the Pont ar Daf car park on the A470 is a well-made path of about 4 miles (6.5 km) there and back; allow two and a half to three hours. It is a real mountain: conditions on top can be wintry when Swansea is mild.

How to get to Waterfall Country & the Brecon Beacons

  • By car: take the A465 up the Vale of Neath to Glynneath, then follow signs for Pontneddfechan (35–40 minutes from Swansea) or Ystradfellte. Car parks charge and fill early at weekends.
  • By public transport: buses reach Glynneath and Pontneddfechan from Neath, but the Four Falls car parks have no practical service.
  • On a tour: guided day tours and hikes to the waterfalls run from Cardiff; gorge walking and photography sessions meet locally.

Insider tips

  • Wear walking boots. The paths are rocky, rooty and slippery all year, and rescues of people in trainers are frequent.
  • After heavy rain the falls are spectacular, but the path behind Sgwd yr Eira may be closed or unsafe.
  • Do not jump or swim in the plunge pools unless you are with a licensed activity provider.
  • Combine the falls with the showcaves at Dan-yr-Ogof or the original Penderyn whisky distillery, both nearby.
